About this worksheet

A consonant blend is two consonants side by side where you hear both sounds: cl in clock, tr in truck, sn in snake.

Unlike a digraph, the two letters keep their own sounds, said quickly together. Children often drop the second sound, so blends get practice of their own.

A worked example

A picture of a clock: cl + ock

  1. Say the first part: /cl/. You can hear /k/ and /l/.
  2. Say the second part: /ock/.
  3. Push them together: clock.
  4. Write the whole word: clock.

Answer: clock

The common mistake

What it looks like: Leaving out the second consonant, as in sed for sled or tuck for truck.

Why it happens: The two sounds go by so quickly that the child only hears the first.

How to fix it: Stretch the blend slowly, /s/…/l/, and have the child hold up a finger for each sound before writing.

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
