About this worksheet

Each vowel has a short sound, like the a in cat, and a long sound that says its name, like the a in cake.

Hearing the difference comes before spelling it. A child who can tell that cake has a long a is ready to learn why it ends in a silent e, and why cat doesn't.

A worked example

A picture of a cake. Long or Short?

  1. Say the word slowly: cake.
  2. Listen to the vowel in the middle: /ā/.
  3. The a says its own name, so it is long.
  4. Circle Long.

Answer: Long

The common mistake

What it looks like: Choosing by how long the word is, so a word like rabbit gets called long.

Why it happens: "Long" sounds as if it means a long word, or a sound held out for a long time.

How to fix it: Ask one question: does the vowel say its name? A says "ay" in cake, but not in cat.
