About this worksheet
A statement tells something (The dog is wet.). A question asks (Where is my hat?). A command tells someone to do something (Please shut the door.). An exclamation shows strong feeling (What a big fish!).
The punctuation at the end is a clue, but not the whole answer: commands and statements both end with a period. The child has to think about what the sentence does.
A worked example
Please shut the door.
- Does it tell, ask, tell someone to do something, or show strong feeling?
- It asks someone to shut the door, so it tells them to do something.
- That makes it a command, even though it says please.
- Check the Command box.
Answer: Command
The common mistake
What it looks like: Calling every sentence that ends with a period a statement, including commands like Put your bag here.
Why it happens: The child goes by the punctuation alone.
How to fix it: Ask: does the sentence want someone to do something? If it does, it is a command.
