About this worksheet

A contraction joins two words into one shorter word, with an apostrophe where letters were left out: do not becomes don't, and I am becomes I'm.

Contractions are everywhere in early reading books. Knowing what they stand for helps a child read them, and knowing where the apostrophe goes helps them spell them.

A worked example

did not (a) did'nt (b) didn't (c) don't

  1. did not loses one letter: the o in not.
  2. The apostrophe goes where the o was: didn't.
  3. (a) puts the apostrophe in the wrong place.
  4. (c) is the contraction for do not, not did not. Circle (b).

Answer: (b) didn't

The common mistake

What it looks like: Putting the apostrophe where the two words join, as in did'nt, instead of where the letters were left out.

Why it happens: Children think the apostrophe shows where one word ends and the next begins.

How to fix it: Write both words, cross out the letter that leaves, and put the apostrophe right where it was.
