About this worksheet
sh and ch are digraphs: two letters that make one sound. sh is the hushing sound in ship and fish, and ch is the sound in chin and lunch.
The two sounds are close, so children often mix them up in spelling. Feeling the difference helps: sh is a long, quiet rush of air, and ch is a short burst.
A worked example
A picture of cheese. sh or ch?
- Say the word: cheese.
- Listen to the first sound: /ch/.
- It is a short burst, not a long hush.
- Circle ch.
Answer: ch
The common mistake
What it looks like: Circling sh for a ch word like chair or cheese, or ch for a sh word.
Why it happens: Both sounds are made in the same part of the mouth.
How to fix it: Try to stretch the sound. sh can be held as long as you like (shhhh), but ch stops right away.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
