About this worksheet
A noun names a person, place or thing: dog, sun, mom, park.
Finding the noun in a sentence is a child's first look at the jobs words do. Each question gives three words from the sentence, so the child tests each one: is it a person, place or thing?
A worked example
A dog digs. (a) digs (b) dog (c) a
- Read the sentence: A dog digs.
- Is digs a person, place or thing? No, it is what the dog does.
- Is dog a person, place or thing? Yes, a dog is a thing you can see.
- Circle (b).
Answer: (b) dog
The common mistake
What it looks like: Circling the action word, digs, because it is the most interesting word.
Why it happens: Children notice what is happening before they notice who or what it is happening to.
How to fix it: Try putting "the" in front of each choice. "The dog" makes sense, and "the digs" doesn't.
