About this worksheet

A silent e at the end of a word makes no sound of its own, but it changes the vowel before it: can becomes cane, and pin becomes pine. The vowel now says its name.

Seeing a short word and its silent e partner side by side shows a child why the e is there. It is one of the most common spelling patterns in first-grade reading.

A worked example

man + e → ______ (a picture of a horse's mane)

  1. Read the short word: man, with a short a.
  2. Add e to the end: m-a-n-e.
  3. The e makes the a say its name: /ā/.
  4. Read and write the new word: mane.

Answer: mane

The common mistake

What it looks like: Reading the new word with the old short vowel, so cane is read as can or can-ee.

Why it happens: The child sounds out letter by letter and gives the e a sound of its own.

How to fix it: Cover the e and read the short word. Then uncover it and say: "The e is quiet, but it makes the a say its name."
