About this worksheet

Adding 10 to 18 doesn't need counting on ten times. One more ten makes the tens digit go up by 1, and the ones stay the same: 18 + 10 = 28.

It is the first place-value shortcut a child learns, and it leads straight to adding 20, 30 and any multiple of ten.

A worked example

18 + 10

  1. 18 has 1 ten and 8 ones.
  2. Adding 10 makes it 2 tens.
  3. The ones stay 8: 28.

Answer: 18 + 10 = 28

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 19 for 18 + 10, or changing the ones digit.

Why it happens: The child adds 1 to the ones out of habit, the same way they count on.

How to fix it: Point to the tens digit and say "one more ten." Only that digit changes; cover the ones with a finger to see it.
