About this worksheet

Writing numbers in columns lines up tens under tens and ones under ones, so each column is a small fact a child already knows.

None of these sums need regrouping, so the child can practice the method itself: ones first, then tens, one digit in each box.

A worked example

79 + 10

  1. Add the ones: 9 + 0 = 9. Write 9 in the ones box.
  2. Add the tens: 7 + 1 = 8. Write 8 in the tens box.

Answer: 89

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding across the rows, 7 + 9, instead of down the columns.

Why it happens: Children read left to right, and the numbers are on rows.

How to fix it: Point down each column before adding. The labels above the example (tens, ones) say which way to go.
