About this worksheet

Doubles, like 6 + 6, are the facts most children learn first by heart. They come up everywhere: two hands, egg cartons, the two sides of a domino.

Once doubles are quick, they unlock their neighbors: 6 + 7 is just one more than 6 + 6.

A worked example

6 + 6

  1. Start at 6.
  2. Count on 6 more: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
  3. Write the total: 12.

Answer: 6 + 6 = 12

The common mistake

What it looks like: Answering 6 + 6 = 11 or 13.

Why it happens: Counting on, the child counts the 6 they started from again, or loses one on the way.

How to fix it: Start counting on with the next number, not the first one, and keep track on fingers: one finger for each number said.

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
