About this worksheet
Ten-frames show a number as tens and ones at a glance: 12 is a full frame and 2 more. Taking away is crossing counters out, so the child can see exactly what is left.
Crossing out from the second frame first and then the full one is the start of taking away through ten, which makes facts like 13 − 5 quick later on.
A worked example
12 − 3
- Start with 12 counters: a full ten-frame and 2 more.
- Cross out 3: the 2 in the second frame, then 1 from the full frame.
- Count what is left: 9.
Answer: 12 − 3 = 9
The common mistake
What it looks like: Crossing out 3 and then writing 3, or counting the crossed-out counters.
Why it happens: After crossing out, both groups are still on the page, and the child counts the wrong one.
How to fix it: Count only the counters with no X on them. Say "these are the ones left" before writing.
