About this worksheet
To compare 17 and 22, a child looks at the tens first: 1 ten is less than 2 tens, so 17 is less, whatever the ones say. Only when the tens match do the ones decide.
The signs are the other half. The open side faces the bigger number and the point faces the smaller one: 17 < 22.
A worked example
17 ___ 22
- Look at the tens: 1 and 2. They are not the same.
- 2 tens is more, so 22 is greater.
- The point faces the smaller number: 17 < 22.
Answer: 17 < 22
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying 19 is greater than 21 because 9 is bigger than 1.
Why it happens: The ones digit is the biggest digit on the page, and it catches the eye before the tens do.
How to fix it: Cover the ones with a finger and compare the tens first. Only uncover the ones when the tens are the same.
