About this worksheet

Many children read = as "the answer comes next." It really means "is the same as": 5 + 2 = 4 + 3 is true, because both sides are 7.

Seeing equations with sums on both sides, or the answer first (9 = 6 + 3), builds the idea of balance that later algebra rests on.

A worked example

6 + 4 = 11 − 2

  1. Work out the left side: 6 + 4 = 10.
  2. Work out the right side: 11 − 2 = 9.
  3. 10 and 9 are not the same, so tick False.

Answer: False

The common mistake

What it looks like: Ticking False for 9 = 6 + 3 because the sum is on the right.

Why it happens: The child expects every equation to read problem, then answer, and anything else looks wrong.

How to fix it: Work out each side on its own, then ask: are they the same number? The order doesn't matter.
