About this worksheet

First graders count to 120 and beyond, starting from any number, not just from 1. Counting on from 147 asks a child to know what comes after it without starting over.

Each number goes up by 1, so the ones digit goes up by 1 too. The interesting moments are the ones that roll over: 109 to 110, and 119 to 120.

A worked example

101, 102, ___

  1. 101 + 1 = 102.
  2. So 102 + 1 = 103.
  3. Write 103 in the box.

Answer: 103

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 1010 after 109, or 200 after 119.

Why it happens: The child adds 1 to the ones as if it were a separate number, and doesn't see that 9 + 1 makes a new ten.

How to fix it: Say the numbers aloud: "one hundred nine, one hundred ten." When the ones reach 9, the next number starts a new ten and the ones go back to 0.

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
