About this worksheet

In first grade children read clocks to the hour (4:00) and the half hour (4:30). The short hand shows the hour; the long hand shows the minutes.

When the long hand points straight up to 12, it is o'clock. When it points straight down to 6, it is half past, which is written :30.

A worked example

The short hand is halfway between 4 and 5. The long hand points to 6. What time is it?

  1. Find the short hand. It has passed 4 but not reached 5, so the hour is 4.
  2. Find the long hand. It points straight down to 6, so it is half past: 30 minutes.
  3. Write the hour, then the minutes: 4:30.

Answer: 4:30

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 5:30 for half past four, because the short hand is halfway to the 5.

Why it happens: At half past, the short hand sits between two numbers, and children read the one it looks closest to, or the one it is pointing toward.

How to fix it: The hour is the number the short hand has just passed. Point to it and say "it has gone past 4, it hasn't reached 5 yet."
