About this worksheet
A number line turns adding into moving forward. A child circles the first number and makes one hop for each one being added, so 14 + 4 is four hops on from 14.
Starting at the first number is quicker than counting both numbers from 1, and it shows that adding always moves to the right. The same picture helps later with adding tens, and with subtracting, which moves back.
A worked example
14 + 4 = ?
- Circle 14 on the number line.
- Draw a hop to 15 and count 1.
- Keep hopping and counting: 16 is 2, 17 is 3, 18 is 4.
- Four hops landed on 18. Circle it and write 18.
Answer: 14 + 4 = 18
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the starting number as the first hop, so 14 + 4 lands on 17.
Why it happens: The child says "one" while touching 14, then has only three hops left.
How to fix it: Count hops, not numbers. Keep the pencil on 14 and say "one" only when it lands on 15.
