About this worksheet

To order two-digit numbers, a child compares the tens first. 25, 47 and 11 have 2, 4 and 1 tens, so 11 is least and 47 is greatest.

Only when two numbers have the same tens does the ones digit decide, as with 54 and 58. Ordering uses the same place value thinking as comparing two numbers, three at a time.

A worked example

25, 47, 11

  1. Look at the tens digits: 2, 4 and 1.
  2. 1 ten is the fewest, so 11 comes first.
  3. 2 tens is next, so 25 comes second.
  4. 4 tens is the most, so 47 comes last.

Answer: 11, 25, 47

The common mistake

What it looks like: Ordering by the ones digit, so 41 comes before 19 because 1 is less than 9.

Why it happens: The child looks at the last digit, or whichever digit stands out, instead of the tens.

How to fix it: Have the child say each number as tens and ones ("4 tens and 1") before ordering. Compare the tens first, and look at the ones only when the tens match.
