About this worksheet
A shape cut into 4 equal parts is cut into quarters, also called fourths. Each part is one quarter, and the whole is 4 quarters. Cut into 2 equal parts, each part is one half.
The parts must be equal: a square cut into 4 strips or 4 triangles is in quarters either way, but 4 uneven pieces are not. The sheet uses circles, squares, rectangles and diagonal cuts, so the child looks at the parts and not the shape.
A worked example
A square cut into 4 equal parts, with one part shaded. One ___ is shaded.
- Count the parts: 4.
- Check that they are all the same size. They are.
- 4 equal parts are quarters.
- One part is shaded, so one quarter is shaded.
Answer: quarter
The common mistake
What it looks like: Calling any one piece a quarter, even when the shape has only 2 parts.
Why it happens: Children learn "quarter" as a word for a piece, before they count how many pieces make the whole.
How to fix it: Count the parts first, every time. 2 equal parts are halves, and 4 equal parts are quarters.
