About this worksheet
Near doubles are facts where the two numbers are one apart, like 6 + 7. A child who knows 6 + 6 = 12 can find 6 + 7 by adding 1 more: 13.
Doubles are often the first facts children remember, so near doubles turn a fact they don't know into one they do. Each question writes the double out, so the child sees the step every time.
A worked example
6 + 7 = ?
- 6 and 7 are one apart.
- Use the double you know: 6 + 6 = 12.
- 7 is 1 more than 6, so the answer is 1 more than 12.
- 12 + 1 = 13.
Answer: 6 + 7 = 13
The common mistake
What it looks like: Stopping at the double: 6 + 7 = 12.
Why it happens: The double comes to mind so quickly that the child forgets the extra 1.
How to fix it: Point to the number that is not part of the double and ask, "Is this one bigger or smaller?" If it has 1 more, so does the answer.
