About this worksheet

Finding 10 less means taking away one ten. In 66 − 10, the 6 tens become 5 tens and the 6 ones stay, so the answer is 56.

A child who sees that only the tens digit changes can do this in their head instead of counting back ten times. It pairs with 10 More and leads to subtracting any multiple of 10.

A worked example

66 − 10 = ?

  1. 66 is 6 tens and 6 ones.
  2. Take away one ten: 5 tens are left.
  3. The ones don't change: still 6.
  4. 5 tens and 6 ones is 56.

Answer: 66 − 10 = 56

The common mistake

What it looks like: Changing the ones digit instead: 66 − 10 = 65.

Why it happens: Taking away usually changes the last digit, as with − 1, so the child changes it here too.

How to fix it: Build the number with ten sticks and loose ones, take one stick away, and count what's left. Then compare the two numbers to see which digit moved.
