About this worksheet

Measuring length starts with counting equal units laid end to end. A bar that lines up with 7 cubes, with no gaps or overlaps, is 7 cubes long.

Measuring with cubes before a ruler shows what a length number means: how many units fit. A ruler is the same idea with the units printed on it.

A worked example

A bar with a row of cubes under it. ___ cubes

  1. Check that the first cube lines up with the left end of the bar.
  2. Touch each cube as you count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
  3. Stop at the cube under the right end of the bar.
  4. The bar is 7 cubes long.

Answer: 7 cubes

The common mistake

What it looks like: Counting a cube twice, or skipping one, in a long row.

Why it happens: The cubes all look alike, so it's easy to lose your place.

How to fix it: Put a small pencil tick on each cube as you count it.
