About this worksheet
Subtracting tens, like 70 − 30, works just like subtracting small numbers, counted in tens. On a number line that counts by tens, a child starts at 70 and makes three jumps back: 60, 50, 40.
Seeing that 7 − 3 = 4 and 70 − 30 = 40 follow the same pattern builds place value. The number line keeps the count honest while that idea settles.
A worked example
70 − 30 = ?
- Start at the dot on 70.
- 30 is 3 tens, so make 3 jumps back.
- Jump to 60, then 50, then 40.
- You land on 40.
Answer: 70 − 30 = 40
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the starting number as a jump, so 70 − 30 lands on 50.
Why it happens: The child says "one" while pointing at 70 instead of on the first jump.
How to fix it: Draw each jump as an arc and number the arcs 1, 2, 3. Count the arcs, not the numbers on the line.
