About this worksheet
A tally chart records a count in bundles of five: four lines and a fifth across them. Counting the bundles by fives and then the single lines is quicker than counting every line.
Reading one row at a time, for the item the question names, is the start of reading graphs and data.
A worked example
Soccer: one bundle and 1. Tag: 2. Jump rope: 3. How many chose jump rope?
- Find the jump rope row.
- There are no bundles.
- Count the lines on their own: 3.
Answer: 3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the crossing line of a bundle as a sixth line, so a bundle reads 6.
Why it happens: Every line looks the same, and the one across is easy to count with the rest.
How to fix it: Point to each bundle and say "five," then count on by ones for the lines on their own.
