About this worksheet
A shape riddle asks a child to use what defines a shape: how many sides, how many corners, whether it is flat or solid.
That is a step beyond naming a shape from a picture. "3 straight sides and 3 corners" is a triangle whatever way it is turned.
A worked example
I have 3 straight sides and 3 corners. What am I?
- Count the sides: 3.
- Count the corners: 3.
- A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners is a triangle. Tick triangle.
Answer: triangle
The common mistake
What it looks like: Ticking square for a rectangle, or circle for a sphere.
Why it happens: The shapes look alike, and the clue that tells them apart (equal sides, flat or solid) is easy to skip.
How to fix it: Read every clue and check it against the answer before ticking. A square needs 4 equal sides; a sphere is a solid you can hold.
