About this worksheet

A digraph is two letters that make one sound: sh in ship, ch in chin, th in thin, wh in whale, ph in phone, and ck at the end of sock.

Children who know single letter sounds often try to sound out s-h separately. Learning that some pairs stay together is the next step in reading and spelling.

A worked example

A picture of a ship, with __ip under it.

  1. Say the word for the picture: ship.
  2. Tap the sounds: /sh/ /i/ /p/. The first sound is /sh/.
  3. /sh/ is one sound written with two letters: s and h.
  4. Write sh to finish the word: ship.

Answer: sh (ship)

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing one letter for the digraph sound, like sip for ship or cin for chin.

Why it happens: The child hears one sound and expects one letter, as with every sound they learned before.

How to fix it: Tap the sounds and count the letters: ship has three sounds but four letters, because s and h share one tap.
